United exit Champions League

Marco Streller and Alex Frei were on target as Basel reached the last-16 of the Champions League with a famous 2-1 win over Manchester United in Group C.

United needed just a singular point to qualify for the knockout stages and although they were dominant throughout, they paid dearly for two lapses in concentration. With the United defence at sixes and sevens, Streller hooked the ball home from 10 yards to send Basel ahead before they added a second late on when Frei tapped home.

United pulled a goal back through Phil Jones after 89 minutes but it was too little too late and the club now face Europa League football this season.
