Liverpool signed Luis Suarez in January knowing the Uruguayan had a prolific strike-record in Holland. Little did they know they would make arguably the best bit of business for the calendar year of 2011. Suarez took little to no time at all adapting to the Premier League and has been one of the most exciting players to watch since his debut.

The striker was handed the No.7 shirt, one worn by Liverpool greats Kevin Keegan and Kenny Dalglish. The 24-year-old has admitted he often fantasized about playing alongside Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, players he played as on Playstation.

“When I was a kid playing on the PlayStation, I always chose Liverpool. I’ve never said it before, but they were already my team at that time,” he told Liverpoolfc.tv.

“It was funny, because at the time I played on the screen beside Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, guys who were at the club when I came.

“To me it was a dream come true.”

Suarez scored on his debut for the Reds and analysts claim that his transition has been seamless, but the man himself admits the gap has been hard to bridge.

The main difference between Ajax and Liverpool are the leagues,” he explained. “The Barclays Premier League is really intense and very physical.

“In England there are no easy matches – ever.”

Suarez’ performances have already stood him out as a Kop idol, with Kopites around the world hailing him as a worthy heir to the No. 7 shirt. The Uruguayan admits he feel’s privileged to don a shirt with such tradition and is delighted to follow in the footsteps of the club’s legends.

“It gives me huge pride,” he said. “When I think about the players who have worn it before, like Kenny Dalglish or Kevin Keegan, it’s been legends at the club.

“When I go onto the pitch, I am aware of the privilege I have been given to wear that number.”

Suarez has been magnificent for both club and country this year, leading to a place on the 23-man short-list for the Ballon d’Or.

Speaking of his nomination, he said: “If I’m among the top 10, that in itself would be a great reward.”
