The 216th Merseyside derby proved to be a red day, with Everton picking up a red card and Liverpool running out the winners. Luis Suarez again put in a positive performance capped off by a goal, but it was Andy Carroll who stole the headlines with his first Premier League goal of the season for the Reds.

After the match, Suarez spoke of his delight after he and strike-partner Carroll fired the goals that secured another three points for Liverpool. The Reds No.7 paid tribute to Andy Carroll and the fans who were at Goodison.

“We tried with one more man,” he said. “For a striker you always try to score but I am happy as well today that Andy scored.

“For me it’s unbelievable because I’ve been here nine months and every time the fans help me. It’s unbelievable of them.”

Andy Carroll broke the deadlock on 70 minutes and it was the England international’s derby debut. Carroll capped off a positive performance with a goal, and expressed his joy after the match.

“It was a good feeling to get the goal,” said Carroll.

“It always is great to score, and to get my first league goal of the season against Everton couldn’t be any better.”

Carroll has come under a lot of scrutiny following his mega-money move from Newcastle to Liverpool, however the forward has put in a string of 90 minute displays following a disappointing start to his Anfield career, which has been marred by a lack of match-fitness. Carroll made the call-up for England’s remaining Euro 2012 qualifiers, along with fellow Red Stewart Downing.
