Wayne Rooney is vying with Patrice Evra to captain Manchester United when the champions welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford on Monday night. Injuries to Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand mean Sir Alex Ferguson will name a new skipper against the North London side.
Patrice Evra, who has captained the side before and is set to return after a knee injury is the likely choice. However, Sir Alex has hinted that Rooney, who wore the armband when Ferdinand and Vidic left the pitch against West Brom may make a good captain for United. He stated, ‘He always gives 100 per cent and these are wonderful qualities for a captain. He exemplifies the spirit of the whole team’.
Meanwhile, Ashley Young has been told by the club that he will continue to play in a wide position this season. Young has played for both England and Aston Villa in a central role in the past, but with United boasting an embarrassment of riches up-front, it seems the winger will compete for a place out wide along with Nani and the returning Antonio Valencia.
