Under the now departed Fabio Capello, England qualified for Euro 2012 with a degree of comfort. They finished unbeaten in their eight matches, topping a group also featuring Montenegro, Switzerland, Wales and Bulgaria.

Jermain Defoe kicked it all with a hat-trick against Bulgaria at Wembley, while Wayne Rooney, Darren Bent and Ashley Young also finished the campaign with three goals.

But the last match, away in Montenegro, proved a sour ending as the home side finished strongly with two goals to claim a draw. And in between Rooney lashed out at a Montenegran defender, so he’s suspended for the first two games in Poland and Ukraine.
