Newcastle boss Alan Pardew last night claimed that his team had stopped the Joey Barton show in its tracks as his side claimed a point on the controversial midfielder’s debut. Barton skippered his new club less than a fortnight after leaving Newcastle and he endured a frustrating evening against his former club as Newcastle somehow hung onto a point despite being second best for the majority of the night.

Pardew said, ‘It was not the Joey Barton show. We did not want that – but he still played well and we wish him well’. Barton added meanwhile, ‘We should have won. If I’m doing the business here then I feel I still have something to offer England’. England boss Fabio Capello has so far distanced himself with questions regarding Barton’s future with the national team however and has questioned his temperament in the past.

Barton himself had a fairly decent game last night without being outstanding. There was a flash of his familiar temper right at the end when he clashed with Sammy Ameobi but it all ended with smiles as they hugged at the final whistle and he saluted both sets of fans as he begins yet another chapter in his controversial career.
