Ten-man Newcastle earned a goalless draw with Everton at St James’ Park. Magpies midfielder Kevin Nolan was dismissed for an ill-timed stamp on Everton striker Victor Anichebe a minute before the break.
Man of the match – In a poor game, very few players made a lasting impression but the battling qualities of Nicky Butt helped his Newcastle side earn a creditable point.
Moment of the match – Mikel Arteta’s injury after seven minutes proved to be the pivotal moment as Everton failed to cope with the subsequent absence of flair and creativity during a frustratingly drab goalless draw.
Attempt of the match – Everton’s Jack Rodwell so nearly broke the deadlock in stoppage time when his low drive from just outside the box was tipped round the post by Steve Harper.
Save of the match – Newcastle stopper Steve Harper came to Newcastle’s rescue in the first half when clawing Joseph Yobo’s near-post header away from goal.
Talking point – Kevin Nolan was shown a straight red card for an awful tackle on Victor Anichebe in the first half but thankfully the Everton player only suffered heavy bruising.
