30 December 2011 – 1 January 2012

No-one could have possibly predicted the remarkable weekend of football which we have just seen. Home losses for Manchester United and Chelsea, in addition to Manchester City’s defeat at Sunderland made it one of the most unpredictable weekends of football in recent seasons.

Here is my team of star performers:

GK: Simon Mignolet: (Sunderland) The Sunderland goalkeeper, who was barely 50% fit, produced a towering display in the victory over Manchester City.

RB: Craig Gardner: (Sunderland) Asked to play out of position but did so to fantastic effect.

CB: Grant Hanley: (Blackburn) Popped up with the winner at Old Trafford after a confident display in defence.

CB: James Collins: (Aston Villa) Shackled Didier Drogba extremely well in the victory over Chelsea.

LB: John Arne Riise: (Fulham) The experienced defender was calm and assured in the draw with Norwich.

RM: Steven Gerrard: (Liverpool) Only played for 30 minutes, but inspired his team to victory over Newcastle.

CM: Mohamed Diame: (Wigan) The powerful midfielder has been a shining light for Wigan this season.

CM: Lee Cattermole: (Sunderland) The combative midfielder was sensational against the City midfield on Sunday.

LM: Stephen Ireland: (Aston Villa) Scored his first goal in two years and set up another for Darren Bent in a fine display versus Chelsea.

S: Yakubu: (Blackburn) Scored twice and ran the line to tremendous effect at Old Trafford.

S: Stephane Sessegnon (Sunderland) The tricky attacker was a thorn in City’s side all game and set up the winner for Ji.
