Fulham need to win to move ahead of Basle and qualify from Europa League Group E with Roma. Boss Roy Hodgson made the competition a priority at the start of the season, but admits he is more concerned about Saturday’s visit of Manchester United in the Premier League.
“We won’t be playing what we consider to be our best team,” he said of Wednesday’s game. “That’s the team that will be playing against Manchester United.
“We will be playing other players who need games, and we’ll be playing players that are obliged to play because we have three players suspended.
“I’m looking forward to seeing Danny Murphy and Dickson Etuhu back in the team.”
Hodgson had hoped to give Johnson, who underwent an exploratory operation at the end of last month, some game time in Switzerland, but he did not travel with the team.
“He trained yesterday but felt a problem and we had to take him out of our plans,” Hodgson said.
“We are probably being too optimistic. He was so anxious himself to get back into the fray and we sometimes go along with it.
“It was a movement that caused him a sharp pain. We took the decision not to risk him and to leave him back for treatment and possibly training back home. I am hoping it was to do with the scar tissue following his recent operation rather than a major problem. If he is pain free he will be fit enough and he will play a part in the game (against Manchester United). We will see.” from bbc sport
