Steve Bruce has admitted he is lacking a striker and has vowed to work as hard as possible to bring in a forward before the window slams shut this week. The Black Cats have made some key signings in midfield and defence over the summer and look a much more organised defensive unit. They have only scored one goal so far this season however on the opening day against Liverpool.

Bruce bolstered his attacking options in the summer by bringing in Ji Dong and Connor Wickham, but has admitted that they will need time to come to terms with the demands of the Premier League. Sunderland’s main striker Asamoah Gyan has failed to find his form so far this season which has led Bruce to scour the market while he still has the chance.

Bruce also believes Darren Bent, who moved to Aston Villa in January, has not been adequately replaced. He said, ‘We’ve brought in Ji and Wickham as players for the future – we were delighted to have the opportunity to get players of their potential in- but we won’t see the best of them for a year to 18 months. In the meantime, we need a bit extra upfront. If we’re honest, we’ve been lacking a bit in that department since Darren Bent left in January and we know that’.
