When Klaas-Jan Huntelaar left Real Madrid in 2009 after barely one season, he was offered to a series of Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United. There were no takers, and he eventually moved to AC Milan and then Schalke – continuing his remarkable goal-scoring record which he carried with him throughout his career.

It is perhaps one of the games’ biggest mysteries that none of the top Premier League sides have attempted to secure the 28-year-old. In an era where goal-scorers are difficult to find, it is extremely hard to argue with the Dutch striker’s record. His record stands at 225 goals in 354 games, and let’s not forget, he has played for Ajax, Real Madrid, Milan and Schalke – and scored as good as a goal every other game with each of them.

He has been described by former Holland boss Louis van Gaal as: “in the penalty area, he is the best in the world, bar none.” Huntelaar has a staggering 26 goals in 25 appearances for Schalke this season, making him the in-form striker in Europe.

With Arsenal searching for a striker to complement Robin Van Persie, Chelsea searching for fresh ideas up-front and Liverpool relying so heavily on Luis Suarez, it will forever remain a mystery why the Dutchman is ignored when the big boys go fishing.
