Arsene Wenger has refused to bow to pressure from Samir Nasri to sell the midfielder by stating he will only be sold for ‘crazy money’ this summer. The Arsenal boss held talks with the French midfielder yesterday as fears grow that he will fail to extend his contract which has just one year left to run. Wenger is fully aware of a possible backlash from the fans if he sells one of his best players to fellow title rivals Manchester United and Manchester City but he is also aware that an unhappy player could have a damaging effect on the rest of the squad.
It is speculated that Wenger will only accept an offer which is in excess £25 million for Nasri but it would be a huge gamble for the club with the midfielder happy to see out the final 12 months of his contract and leave for free next summer. Both Manchester clubs are willing to pay a figure of £20 million whilst Inter Milan and AC Milan are also keen on bringing him to Italy. City are prepared to offer him a contract of £150,000 a week whilst his current club are not prepared to offer more than £90,000 in keeping with their strict budget. It is unlikely that the player will change his mind and sign a new deal so Wenger is taking a massive gamble in the current football climate. He has already lost Gael Clichy to Manchester City this summer for £7 million and the sales of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri would have a huge knock-on effect on the rest of his squad.
Meanwhile, Cesc Fabregas was present at the Arsenal training ground yesterday as he desperately awaits his dream move to Barcelona. Arsenal are holding out for £40 million whilst Barcelona are unwilling to increase their bid of £34 million. There remains huge dispute over the transfers of Jon Toral and Hector Bellerin who were signed for £650,000 by Wenger with Barcelona wanting £6 million for the pair and therefore deducting it from the final figure for Fabregas.
