Manchester United will get their pre-season training underway on Monday before jetting off to the US for a tour on Monday week. Pre-season training is not a period that is typically enjoyed by players, but with a tour of America included, the players are relishing the prospect of beginning their preparations for the new campaign. United will play five matches in the US, beginning in Boston on July 13 where they will play New England Revolution before facing Seattle Sounders on July 20. They will then face Chicago Fire on July 23 before facing an MLS All-Stars squad on July 27. The tour will conclude in spectacular fashion with a match against European Champions Barcelona in a re-run of the Champions League final in Washington on July 30.
New signings Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David de Gea will join their new team-mates on the tour but one player who will miss out is Javier Hernandez who has been given leave since his performances for Mexico in the Gold Cup. The tour will also give Sir Alex Ferguson the chance to have a look at his young players including Danny Welbeck, Tom Cleverley and Federico Macheda who have returned to the club. Both Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand missed out on the tour last year due to international duty and injury and are relishing the trip. Ferdinand told MUTV, ‘We always enjoy going over to play in America. MLS is doing very well now and more and more people are aware of it over here. They’ve had some big players come over from Europe to play there as well like Becks, Freddie Ljungberg and Thierry Henry’.
Wayne Rooney also stated he is looking forward to the tour and added, ‘The standard of football in America is very good…Being able to meet out fans across the world is another great thing about the tours…Hopefully we can put on some good performances for them during the games on tour’. The United States has become well known for it’s fantastic training facilities and with the Premier League season fast approaching, Sir Alex Ferguson will insist his players are in the correct physical shape for the beginning of next season. The tour can be followed on MUTV and the latest news can be found at www.manutd.com.
