Carlos Tevez’s hopes of a dramatic return to South America were dealt a major blow last night after Manchester City rejected a £35 million bid from Corinthians. The Brazilian club fell way short of City’s valuation for their star striker and City officials were also concerned about how the deal was to be structured. If City are to do business with any club, they are looking for a straight cash offer of at least £40 million so they can press on with a move for fellow Argentinean striker Sergio Aguero.

The concerns over the deal were raised by remarks made from a director of Corinthians who insisted the club could not afford such an expensive deal and the only option would be to pay a small cash sum to take the player on loan, and then pay a variety of complex add-ons depending on his success at the club. Duilio Alves stated, ‘It would have to be a loan. We cannot buy him, that is an absurd figure, not viable for the Brazilian football market. His intention exists. If one day it is possible, Corinthians are interested. It is not impossible. We are going to try to discover all the details. It is dream we are tying to make true. I do not want to give false hope to the fans. We will try’.

Tevez has made no secret of his desire to leave the club and would welcome a move back to South America in order to be close to his family. City however will not be pressured into a deal for a player who they believe is worth a lot more than what is currently being offered. Relatively unproven English striker Andy Carroll moved to Liverpool from Newcastle in January for £35 million and City feel their man is worth at least £15-20 million more. Tevez’s agent Kia Joorabchian stated, ‘His dream and mine is to see him back with Corinthians. He said he wants to return because he wants to win the Copa Libertadores’.
