La Celeste coach Oscar Tabarez believes his side can achieve something special in South Africa and go all the way.
The South Americans have already collected four points from their first two group games, a 0-0 draw with France and a 3-0 win over hosts South Africa.
A draw in their final Group A clash with Mexico would guarantee qualification to the knockout stages, where Tabarez says his side would fear nobody.
“We are convinced that we can win the World Cup,” said Tabarez. “There might be teams that are better than us but we are convinced that we can be a tough rival for any team.”
Uruguay have not made it to the last four since Mexico 1970 and Tabarez believes that a semi-final spot is the least his men can hope to achieve.
“We came to this World Cup in the hope that we would do something different to what Uruguay has done since the 1970s. We’ve never come close to third or fourth place,” added Tabarez.
