When Suarez arrived at Anfield, along with Andy Carroll, a new era had begun. However, Liverpool were desperate to break away from the “two man team” tag that had been placed on the deadly Gerrard/Torres tandem, but after seeing the ill effects on the reliance of both men to claw Liverpool back into games week in week out, something needed to change. Suarez has done just that.
In Holland, he was reknowned for his goal-scoring ability, scoring 49 goals in 48 games last season for Ajax, but it was his eye for opprutunity that really caught the eye of Damien Comolli. Luis Suarez can be classified as a playmaker. In 11 games at his new club, Suarez has four goals, four assists, and numerous created chances for himself and the team. Suarez’s confidence allows him to take on defenders, and make them look like schoolboys. His generosity could sometimes hurt his statistics, as he could easily be in double figures for goals, but Suarez has admitted that the team comes before personal accolades. “The Liverpool Way.”
Liverpool have enjoyed their best run of form since that 2008/2009 season which saw the Reds push United all the way, and it is in large part to the Kenny Dalglish factor at the club. Since his return, Liverpool have taken 33 points from a possible 48, with only Chelsea notching more in that time. Hailed as the club’s best ever player, Dalglish handed Suarez the coveted No.7 upon request, and has had nothing but praise for the young Uruguayan.
After the game at Fulham, where Liverpool ran out 5-2 winners, Dalglish said, “He was fantastic. He was running as hard at the end as he was at the beginning. He was causing them all sorts of problems.
“He’s really settled in and that’s a credit to him and his family. They’ve settled into the area, settled into the football and I don’t think in our wildest dreams we thought he’d settle in so quickly and take to English football like he has done.
“He’s graced the pitch every time he’s played on it.”
Steven Gerrard has been sidelined since March, but was in attendance for the rout, and has also been full of praise for Liverpool’s new idol.
“It goes to show how good Luis Suarez was. Usually, if you score a hat-trick, you deserve to win man of the match. But Luis Suarez’s movement, touches, awareness, vision and the way he took his goal was sensational. He’s a midfielder’s dream. As soon as you look up, he’s making great movement and gives you an option all the time.
“What impresses me even more about him is when he hasn’t got the ball – his tenacity to win it back and attitude. In the 92nd minute, he was trying to get his second goal and still closing defenders down. He was just an absolute joy to watch.”
Suarez has brought about comparison’s with Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez, with Suarez even admitting that the City striker was his inspiration in the move.
Gerrard said, “I think it’s natural he’s going to be compared to Tevez because of the way he’s built, his shape and the way he plays. But from what I’ve seen so far, and I’m going to be slightly biased because he’s one of my teammates and one of our players, I think he could go on to be better. I can’t wait (to play with Suarez next season). I am looking forward to next season already. Hopefully we can finish this season with another two wins, get a good pre-season under our belts and have a good crack at it next year.”
The praise didn’t stop there however, with Jamie Carragher, now second on Liverpool’s all time appearance list, taking time away from his own headlines to hand Luis Suarez more praise.
“If he [Suarez] keeps playing like that I think he’ll be a bigger legend than I’ll ever be,” said Carragher.
“He looks a really top player, he plays for the team. It shows he’s adaptable and versatile, he can do different jobs for the teams. Players coming in have made a huge difference as well, Suarez is superb.
“I hope I’m not getting too carried away here but I think the performances that he’s showed have proved he’s going to be a real player for Liverpool, not just between now and the end of season but for years to come.”
If recent results and performances are anything to go by, then next season promises to be a good one for Liverpool. They have beaten United, beaten Chelsea, fought to a draw in that marathon match at the Emirates with Arsenal, and have been one of the most exciting teams this half of the season. They’ve returned to “the Liverpool Way”, something everyone seems to be buying in to.
