Arsenal midfielder Alex Song has accepted a three-match suspension for violent conduct. The Cameroon star pleaded guilty to stamping on Joey Barton’s leg as the Gunners drew 0-0 with Newcastle on the opening weekend of the season. The stamp was missed by officials but seemed to incense the Newcastle bench as well as Barton who pleaded with the fourth official for action on the pitch.

Arsenal will be without their key midfielder for Premier League games against Liverpool, Manchester United and Swansea. It is the last thing the club needs having lost Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona, the impending loss of Samir Nasri to Manchester City and the fact that young midfielder Jack Wilshere is still struggling with an ankle injury. Arsenal new boy Gervinho is also banned for three games following his sending-off in the same game for slapping Barton round the face.

Meanwhile, boss Arsene Wenger has insisted he is ready to spend £40 million on new players – providing he can find players which are worth the money. The Arsenal boss is again facing accusations he is more concerned with balancing the books than winning titles but has stated, ‘We are not frightened to spend money when we think it’s right’.
