Blackburn defender Chris Samba has pleaded with boss Steve Kean – Let me join Arsenal. The giant defender signed a new five-year deal at Ewood Park only a few months ago but stated yesterday, ‘I want to play Champions League football. Which player doesn’t dream of that?’

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been weighing up a £12 million bid for Samba since the end of last season but has so far failed to make a firm offer. The defender added, ‘I don’t know what is happening with Arsenal because I am not dealing with it and it’s not my problem. At the minute I am still at Blackburn but it would be a big lie if I told you ‘everything is good and I don’t want to play in the Champions League’. Wenger has made no secret of his desire to land at least one defender this summer and has also been linked with moves for Bolton defender Gary Cahill and Everton’s Phil Jagielka. It has been reported that Wenger sees Samba and Jagielka as the perfect solution to his central defensive problem which has cost his side the title in each of the last two seasons.

Meanwhile, Blackburn boss Steve Kean made the bizarre statement yesterday that the club will be playing Champions League football within the next three or four years. The club only just avoided relegation last season and Kean has seen no real investment made in the team since the takeover of the club last year.
