Former Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has insisted once more that Steve Bruce’s position as manager is not under threat at the club. A shake up at the Stadium of Light this week has seen Black Cats owner Ellis Short replace Quinn as chairman with the latter taking up a role focusing on international development.

The news had led to reports that Bruce would be replaced as manager after his side’s poor start to the season, but Quinn has stated that is simply not the case. He said, ‘Steve is not isolated by this, it’s the exact opposite. It’s time for him to build a closer relationship with Ellis’.

He added, ‘Steve will get time for this team to gel. There’s another window looming. Unless the situation becomes apocalyptic, and it’s no good worrying about that, Steve will get time. Ellis will be a great chairman’.
