Tottenham End Drought as Son Lifted Europa League Trophy

Tottenham Hotspur ended their 17-year major trophy drought as they lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy on Wednesday. Son Heung-Min and co defeated fellow Premier League outfit, Manchester United 1-0 at San Mames Stadium in Bilbao, Spain.

Tottenham Beat Man United in the Europa League Final

Having to endure plenty of years without winning any major trophies, the Lilywhites finally saw their fortune change this midweek. Ange Postecoglou’s men successfully took down Man United with a single goal from Brennan Johnson three minutes before the half-time break.

Man United tried hard to get back on level terms, but none of their attempts were successful as Tottenham defended well. Despite Ruben Amorim’s men’s desperate efforts, Spurs managed to hold on until the final whistle was blown.

Spurs’ Captain, Son, Won First Trophy at Club Level

Tottenham’s  Europa League victory also marked an important feat for the club’s captain, Son Heung-Min. The South Korean international star also ended his trophy drought at club level, as it was his first title since turning professional.

During his time with Spurs, Son only finished as runners-up on two occasions, the 2018/19 Champions League and the League Cup (2020/21). That’s why lifting the Europa League on Wednesday was such a massive moment for the 32-year-old, as it’s something that he has been craving for.

The attacker has plenty of individual awards, including becoming the co-top scorer in the Premier League, but winning a trophy for his team was what he had been missing until this midweek. Being the captain for Tottenham, it was certainly a special moment for Son to finally lift a trophy for his side.

Aside from ending their trophy drought, winning the Europa League also means that Spurs get a ticket to play in next season’s Champions League. That’s a massive achievement for Tottenham this season, since they only finished 17th in the Premier League standings.
