Getting closer to World Cup 2014 opening day, a troubling news arrived for Italian national team as their preparation for the major tournament turned rather messy with the injury for their midfielder, Riccardo Montolivo.
Being counted as one of Cesare Prandelli’s main players in midfield, Montolivo was set to be part of Azzurri’s 23-men squad, but things apparently change after he suffered a serious looking injury during Italy’s friendly fixture against Ireland on Saturday.
The AC Milan skipper only played less than 10 minutes on that weekend friendly, before a collusion forced him to left the pitch in a stretcher, giving a sour look on Prandelli’s face throughout the remaining of that tie.
The latest report from Football-Italia suggested that Montolivo picked up a fracture on his tibia and will require surgery to fully recover from it. Further statement from Italian medic, Enrico Castellacci, stated that the 29-year-old would be out for at least two months, which means there’s no World Cup for Monto.
“He has a fracture of the tibia. I’m waiting to see the radio graphical results before assessing everything, but more or less every tibia fracture needs surgery. There will be no World Cup for Montolivo, I’m so sorry for the boy. He will probably need around two months out,” Castellacci revealed.
A disappointing news indeed for both Montolivo and also Italy’s squad since the Milan player’s versatility has been a prize asset for Cesare Prandelli’s setup.
