I was Liverpool’s first choice – Roberto Martinez

The Wigan boss was heavily linked with a move to Anfield at the end of last season, following Kenny Daglish’s departure, but negotiations ‘broke down’ and terms couldn’t be agreed between the two parties.

Martinez told the Daily Mirror; “We must educate people,”

“In five or six years, we (Wigan) reap the benefits. Maybe I won’t be there then.

“But this is not why I stayed, when Liverpool made me an offer.”

This sparks slight controversy following Brendan Rogers’ dreadful start to his Liverpool career after being thrashed by West Brom at the weekend.
