Disappointment for France, Portugal’s Joy in World Cup Qualifier
Contrasting results earned by two top footballing nations, France and Portugal on the latest World Cup 2018 qualifiers this weekend.
Les Blues fell into a disappointing 2-1 away defeat to Sweden, while Selecao put on a dominant performance as they defeated Latvia 3-0.
Playing away from home, France were not afraid in putting on an aggressive display as they went one goal up on 37 minutes through Olivier Giroud’s lovely finish.
However, that lead didn’t last long as the Scandinavian outfit snatched an equalizing goal two minutes before half time break with an effort from Jimmy Durmaz.
Both sides continue to push forward in search for that winning goal and just when the tie looked to be heading for a draw, Sweden got themselves a bizarre winner as Hugo Lloris’ blunder was pounced by Ola Toivonen deep in stoppage time.
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo continuing his goal scoring form at international level as he bagged a brace to help his side picking up all three points.
Having more quality and talent, Fernando Santos’ side dominated that tie since early minutes, but it took them until 41 minutes before they eventually broke the dead lock with an effort from Ronaldo.
The Real Madrid star can’t seem to stop himself from scoring as he added his second midway into the second half, before providing an assist for Andre Silva, who scored his nation’s third and wrapped up that game.
