Argentina’s World Cup 2018 campaign is on the brink of exit following their shocking 3-0 defeat from Croatia, which on contrary is heading into the knock out stage.
The Balkan side arrived into their second match with a positive atmosphere after winning their first match against Nigeria, while Albiceleste were under huge pressure to win as they only picked up a 1-1 draw against Iceland.
Zlatko Dalic’s men played a rather cautious game early on as they seemingly waiting what kind of setup that Argentina are planning.
However, once Croatia got the hold of things, they started to play their own game and create some problems for their South American counterpart.
Argentina themselves looked rather loss and struggling to put up consistent attacking threat in the first half, which saw them only getting one or two goal scoring chances.
Luka Modric and co looked more dangerous going forward since the first 45 minutes, despite playing more on the counter.
After a goalless first half, both sides tried to increase their intensity and it was Croatia that got things going as Ante Rebic puts them ahead, taking advantage of Willy Caballero’s blunder.
The Argentina’s goalie fluffed his attempted kick and just bounced in front of Rebic who volleyed it from close range.
That goal simply gave Croatia more confidence as they continue to look dangerous on the counter and eventually ended that tie as a contest when Modric netted a lovely long range effort on 80 minutes.
The Vetreni finally completed Argentina’s misery by scoring a third goal in stoppage time through Ivan Rakitic’s close range effort.
This win puts Croatia into the next round of World Cup 2018, which is their first since way back in 1998.
Meanwhile, for Argentina their fate now mostly relies on their upcoming final group game against Nigeria.
