Chelsea are cutting their gap at the top of the English Premier League standings as they hold their second-place seat after beating Brentford 2-1. Meanwhile, Manchester City still can’t get away from their recent run of poor form after suffering a disappointing home loss against their rival, Manchester United at Etihad Stadium.
The Blues Mantain Top Spot Challenge
Chelsea’s boss, Enzo Maresca may insist that his team are not ready yet to challenge for the league title but they are currently on the running, especially after grabbing all three points this past weekend. The Blues beat Brentford 2-1 with goals coming from Marc Cucurella on 43 minutes and Nicolas Jackson 10 minutes from time.
Patrick Mbuemo did make things interesting after pulling one back for Brentford in the 90th minute but even after Cucurella saw red, Chelsea still managed to hold their lead. That victory established The Blues second place seat as they now have 34 points, just two points from the league leader, Liverpool, that still have one game behind.
Man City Suffered Another Disappointing Result in the Manchester Derby
Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola’s men saw themselves picking up another negative result following a disappointing 2-1 loss against Man United at Etihad Stadium. Keen on showing that they have turned the page around at least in the Premier League, City were determined to snatch all three points in their weekend derby clash.
Things seemed to be heading positively for Man City when their first-half domination ended with a goal from Josko Gvardiol’s headed goal in 36 minutes. Nothing really changed much after the break and the Citizen looked to have enough to grab all three points before a disastrous last five minutes happened for them starting by conceding a penalty which Bruno Fernandes converted in 88 minutes.
Things suddenly turned worse for Man City two minutes later when Amad Diallo broke free on the counter-attack and shockingly netted United’s second. The home team didn’t have enough time to get back on level terms and must accept another disastrous result.
