Two favorites, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid started off their Champions League knock out stages’ first leg matches with victories over their opponents.
The German giant completely dismantled Arsenal 5-1 at Allianz Arena and could have scored more goals if not for desperate saves from Gunners’ goalie, David Ospina.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men started off brightly as their attacking approach was rewarded with a lovely goal from Arjen Robben after just 11 minutes into the match.
However, the visitor were able to snatch an equalizing goal after Alexis Sanchez pounced on his own missed penalty on 30 minutes.
Not content with the first half score line, Bayern turned it up more after the break as they netted four goals courtesy of Robert Lewandowski, Thiago Alcantara’s double along with Thomas Muller.
It was a disappointing result indeed for Gunners, though they did managed to snatch an away goal, but Arsene Wenger can consider his side ‘lucky’ not to concede more than the five they let in.
Meanwhile, at Santiago Bernebau, Los Blancos defeated their opponent 3-1 with goals from Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Casemiro’s cracking long range effort.
However, Napoli also got themselves a precious away goal, which give them some hope of turning things around in the second leg tie.
The Partenopei somewhat stunned their opponent early on as they got in front through Lorenzo Insigne’s smart effort on seven minutes.
Unfortunately, Madrid have more than enough quality to turn things around as they eventually did with Benzema, Kroos and Casemiro’s effort.
