Atletico Madrid finally managed to get the better of their city rival, Real Madrid in European competition as they defeated Los Blancos 4-2 to secure this year’s UEFA European Super Cup.

It’s been a while since Atletico were able to overcome their city rival, but it doesn’t gave them any low self esteem as they immediately got themselves in front straight from the kick off through Diego Costa.

That early lead lifted Madrid’s spirit though as Julen Lopetguis’s men pushed hard in search for an equalizing goal, which they eventually earned on 27 minutes from Karim Benzema’s effort.

Drawing 1-1 in the first 45 minutes, both teams continuing their search for glory, but it looked like things were going into Madrid’s favor like in previous games when Sergio Ramos gave them a slender lead with his penalty kick on 63 minutes.

However, Costa continue to shine for his team as they managed to get themselves back on level terms with another effort from the Spanish international forward on 79 minutes.

That 2-2 scoreline lasted until the normal 90 minutes mark, forcing the match go into another 2 x 15 to separate both teams.

Fortune seemingly shifted again in favor of Los Rojiblancos as in extra time they got themselves ahead once again, this time from Saul Niguez.

Diego Simeone’s men eventually secured their victory that day when Koke netted home his team’s fourth on 104 minutes.
