Despite Manchester United’s fine 3-2 win over rivals City on Sunday, the fact remains that they have lost their last two matches in the Premier League.
With respect to Bolton, United will see this weekend’s tie as a chance to return to winning ways as we enter the business end of the season. Sir Alex Ferguson, despite the return of a number of defenders, still has problems in midfield, however, and the return of Rafael could lead to Phil Jones being deployed in the centre of the park.
Mexican striker Javier Hernandez has admitted that he is suffering from second-season syndrome, meanwhile, and will be keen to add to his six goals in the league this weekend, but he may have to be content with a place on the bench once more.
Wayne Rooney should start after his double against City but Michael Owen, Darren Fletcher, Tom Cleverley, Fabio, Ashley Young and Nemanja Vidic remain long-term absentees.
Bolton, meanwhile, look set to lose key defender Gary Cahill to Chelsea within the next couple of days, leaving them light in defence. They enter the tie, however, knowing that a win could move them out of the bottom three and will take heart from fellow relegation rivals Blackburn’s win over the champions in December.
Predicted team: De Gea, Rafael, Smalling, Ferdinand, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Jones, Nani, Welbeck, Rooney.
