Part four: strikers

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has forever maintained that, in order to be successful, the club needs four first-team strikers firing on all cylinders. Some have fared better than others this season, but as we approach the second half of the campaign, the club has a series of options in forward areas.

Despite playing in midfield for parts of season thus far, Wayne Rooney has registered 13 league goals in 17 appearances. He has also returned to the type of form which surely makes him, on his day, the best player in England. He is undoubtedly the talisman for the club and as long as he continues to produce performances, Sir Alex’s side will continue to battle for success.

Danny Welbeck has also endured a successful season in the first-team, making 19 appearances to date and scoring six goals. Meanwhile Dimitar Berbatov, who couldn’t get a game at the beginning of the season, has five in his last two games. Last season’s success story, however, Javier Hernandez, has struggled with injury.

Michael Owen has also missed a large part of the campaign with injury, but scored three times in the Carling Cup earlier in the season. The club, without doubt, are well stocked in the forward areas and with 49 goals scored in the league to date; the position is not in need of strengthening.
