Luis Suarez will return to Liverpool’s starting line-up after serving his one-match suspension for a misconduct charge. The Uruguayan will be available for Liverpool’s next three games before the pending appeal takes place concerning Suarez’ eight-match ban.

Liverpool will be full of confidence travelling to the Etihad Stadium following their 3-1 over Newcastle and City’s loss to Sunderland on New Years Day. Roberto Mancini has called for his team to respond following their failure to capitalize on Manchester United’s shocking loss to Blackburn. Steven Gerrard has called for a similar response for Liverpool as they begin a January that could shape the title race for 2012.

Gerrard could make his first start since October following two solid performances off the bench, and could start alongside Charlie Adam in midfield. Andy Carroll is likely to retain his place following two promising performances. Carroll was unlucky not to score against Newcastle after sending a smashing header off the crossbar, a story which has marred Carroll’s season.

Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel will remain among the back four with their consistent performances helping Liverpool boast one of the best defensive records in the Premier League.

The New Year will kick off in style for Liverpool, who will play City three times in the month of January, tomorrow in the league and then twice in the Carling Cup semi-finals. Liverpool will need to continue their winning ways if they plan to make the top four this season and make a first attempt at silverware since 2006. 2012 is upon us, can Liverpool kick off the second leg of the season with a win over top of the table Manchester City?
