Real Madrid have secured the signing of Portugal left-back Fabio Coentrao from Benfica for a figure of £27 million. The 23-year-old defender has agreed personal terms with the club and is set to undergo a medical later today. He impressed at last year’s World Cup and is widely regarded as one of the most promising wing-backs in the world. Jose Mourinho has been chasing the Portuguese international since last summer and was said to be delighted at finally securing his man. He began his professional career at Rio Ave in 2005 before moving to Benfica in 2007, initially as winger. He was less than impressive in his first full-season but in 2009 he was converted to left-back and has since become one of Benfica’s most influential players.

Coentrao’s club form led to a place in the national team for last year’s World Cup and he was impressive as Portugal reached the round of 16 where they lost 1-0 to eventual winners Spain. His £27 million move makes him the second most expensive defender in the world behind Rio Ferdinand who moved from Leeds to Manchester United in 2002 for £29 million. The transfer may leave question marks over the future of current Madrid left-back Marcelo but reports have emerged that the Brazilian is likely to be deployed in a left-wing position due to his attacking instincts.

Coentrao told www.realmadrid.com, ‘Every footballer dreams of playing for Real Madrid. I wanted to since I was a child. I used to imagine playing for this team. It was my dream and it has now come true. I hope to earn continuity and to show people I’m ready to play here…The Spanish league is very competitive and there are lots of good teams. I am determined to try and win it with Real Madrid’. The signing is a statement of intent to Barcelona as Madrid attempt to swing the balance of power in the Spanish league.
