Steven Gerrard: “It’s always cruel when it goes to penalties. There has to be a loser. Cardiff were superb today.”
On Anthony Gerrard missing his penalty: “One of us was going to be sad, one was going to be celebrating. It happens. I’ve got mixed emotions at the moment but I feel for Anthony and Cardiff.”
Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt: “We kept on believing and that was the important thing. I said to Steven Gerrard that we would get back into the game and that’s what we did.
“I was disappointed not to have played longer but I had to forget about that and I was pleased when I scored.
“I knew I had to score my penalty or it would be almost all over but that’s always the case and I just had to score and that’s what I did.
“We wanted to win the trophy so badly.
“This is what I came to Liverpool for and to win a first trophy is excellent and hopefully we can add another later in the season.”
