Just a month on from the end of the 2010-2011 Premier League campaign and the 2011-2012 season is beginning to get underway with all club’s starting their preseason training today.  Some club’s are still busy in the transfer market as Manchester City have signed left-back Gael Clichy under the noses of Liverpool, and some are just getting back into the swing of things like Tottenham and Everton.

Liverpool will have enjoyed today’s training following the return of captain Steven Gerrard and £35 million man Andy Carroll, and the addition of Italian Alberto Aquilani.  Martin Kelly also returned to training after missing the remainder of the season when he picked up an injury in February.

Aquilani returned to Melwood today after a season long loan at Juventus, where he enjoyed a fine season.  However, the Italian giant’s failed to pick up their option to buy out the midfielder after failing to agree a fee for the player.

Vice captain Jamie Carragher spoke to reporters about Liverpool’s ambitions on picking up this season where last season left off.

‘We’ve had longer than usual off this year and I want to get started now,’ he said. ‘It’s a new start and there’s a new sense of optimism. It’s going to be great to have most of the players around from the start of pre-season.

‘Our form in the second half of last season was very good and we need to ensure we prepare well and get off to a decent start this season.

‘It’s good for the manager to have everyone around and it means after a decent pre-season we should be ready to start the season. It will be great to see all the lads again and I’m sure there will be a few new faces coming in before the transfer window closes.’

New £16m signing Jordan Henderson was absent as he was given extended leave having been involved with England Under 21s at the European Championships last month.

However, Kenny Dalglish’s new addition to his staff following the departure of Sammy Lee, Steve Keen, was at the club today
