After getting a winning start on their 2011 Asia Tour yesterday, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish delivered more good news to the Kop faithful after confirming the club had agreed a deal for Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing. The player is set to undergo his medical at Melwood this afternoon.
Downing has been on the Anfield radar from the end of the season where the winger scored on the Reds on the final day of the season, and expressed his desire to move to Anfield after learning of the Reds interest. Villa rebuffed Liverpool’s £15m offer for the winger last week, but caved to the enticing offer of £20m the Reds tabled this week.
If the player passes the medical as expected, Downing will be the second player signed by the club this week (Charlie Adam) and the third of the summer transfer window.
‘We have had permission to speak to him and he is coming up for talks,’ said Dalglish, shortly after arriving in Kuala Lumpur.
‘Now we have to agree terms and he is having a medical – hopefully it will be successful. We will have to see what happens because it is a work in progress. We will keep you informed.’
The Reds continue to be a key figure in this summer’s transfer window, and a list of players could be set for the exit later this week as the Reds look to recoup some of the fees spent and generate more cash for transfers. The Reds are still in the market for a left back and are reportededly leading the chase for Lyon left-back Aly Cissokho, with a fee around £10 million enough to land the defender.
A development yesterday reported that the Anfield outfit could table a surprise bid for Real Madrid and Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain. The Reds are keen to add a third striker option to their star duo Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez, and have earmarked Higuain as the man to juice the strength of depth. Real Madrid are keen to hold on to their squad, but should a deal be struck for Carlos Tevez and should Liverpool table a bid of £25 million, a deal could be on the books.
Ezequiel Lavezzi also remains on the Anfield radar.
