During their golden era, winning a cup was not only a “goal” on the to-do list of Liverpool, it was a requirement.  During a four year span, the Carling Cup never left Anfield, and now it’s back in Kenny Dalglish’s hands, Kopites can only dream of where the Kop King will take them next.

The final on Sunday saw Liverpool’s hard cup-run, which saw them take on Stoke City, Chelsea and Manchester City away, come to a golden finish.  Steven Gerrard fulfilled a boyhood dream of leading the Reds up to the Royal Box at Wembley, and the Reds had bagged some silverware after a six year wait.  While the Reds will celebrate their win, though, Liverpool’s owners have stated the Reds will need to continue to focus on the bigger task; finishing in the top four.

“We should enjoy what we’ve done but know that we’ve got to look forward,” Dalglish told liverpoolfc.tv.

“Everybody loved it, but when you like something and you’ve enjoyed the taste, it makes you that little bit more anxious to get back there.

“But we’ve got a long way to go this season, and I’m not trying to put a dampener on anything from Sunday, but we’ve got to be realistic.

“I’m sure we’ll move onwards and upwards, but we won’t do that if we think we’ve arrived anywhere.”

The Reds ultimate goal this season set by owners Fenway Sports Group was to regain Champions League football.  While the Reds are still within touching distance of fourth place and have a quarter-final match-up with Stoke City in the FA Cup, the Reds know they will need to grab fourth if their season is to be an ultimate success.

Jamie Carragher, who added yet another winners medal to his collection, has urged the Reds to regain their focus on their League ambitions, or their season could still be deemed a failure.

“We should be looking to get into Europe every year through our league position rather than through winning the Carling Cup,” Carragher told the Daily Mail.  “Yes, it is nice to have a trophy in the bag but we are bigger and better than that. It’s great that we have qualified for the Europa League, of course it is, but we want to do that through our league position.”

Craig Bellamy, who has been a revelation since singing on for his second spell at Anfield, echoed the call of Carragher to put their cup glory behind them and march up the league table.

“It’s not the end of the season for us now we’ve won a trophy’ said the Wales international.

“The simple fact is that at this club there is pressure on, day-in day-out, to play at the highest level. That’s what we’ve got to continue to try to do. The Champions League is where we want to be.”

While Liverpool Football Club and Kopites all around are elated after bringing home their first trophy in six years, the club must now regain their focus in order to bring back Champions League football.  Along with the FA Cup, the Reds season could shape up to be a major success story.  Finish those two goals, and Kopites will really have something to shout about.
