Keen on defending their league title, Zenit were keen on making a bright start into their new league season.
However, it was Dinamo that got off to a better start on that weekend clash as they found themselves going one goal up on 28 minutes through Aleksandr Kokorin.
The host finally got themselves back on level term a minute before half time break with a penalty from Hulk.
That late spot kick also saw Dinamo playing with 10 men as their defender Tomas Hubocan picked up his second yellow card.
After the break, Zenit took advantage over their man advantage as they push forward vigorously and eventually netting home the second goal from Oleg Shatov on 67 minutes.
