The away side were looking for a fresh new start under their new manager, Gustavo Poyet, but things were not going well as Swansea put on an excellent performance on the day. After successfully holding Michael Laudrup's men into a goalless first 45 minutes, things finally went bad early in the second half when Phillip Bardsley netted an own goal on 57 minutes.
From that moment on, everything became really difficult for Sunderland as Swansea practically ripped them apart, starting with the second goal which was scored by Jonathan De Guzman after only a minute from the opener. The away side extended their lead on 64 minutes from Wilfried Bony's spot kick, before Steven Fletcher netting an own goal to make it 4-0 10 minutes from time.
