They may be struggling to keep themselves away from relegation trouble in current English Premier League campaign, but Sunderland transformed into a very tough side in cups game which was once again proven this weekend when they marched into the next stage of FA Cup. Playing in front of their home crowd at Stadium Of Lights, the Black Cats managed to eliminate a tough, Southampton side on that Saturday battle. Both teams looked really determined in getting that ticket into the sixth round as they put on an attacking display straight from kick off.
It was not easy for any of those two teams in breaking each others defense, especially during the first 45 minute as that half ended in goalless draw. However, early in the second period, Sunderland finally got themselves in front when Craig Gardnes scored on 49 minutes. Southampton tried hard to get back on level terms, but none of their efforts were successful as they were forced to bow down from that competition as the home side hanging on to their slender lead.
