Southampton vs Sheffield United highlights (3-0)

Sheffield United defender Phil Jagielka: "It is another disappointing performance. We tried to keep it tight and got a bit unlucky with the first goal but the second put the game beyond us.

"I have not seen the first one back. The ball goes up in the air and we lose the next dual. We don't want to lose too many touches in our own box. The first goal was crucial.

We knew the next goal would be important. We started on the front foot second half but lose the ball and before you know if is in the back of the net.

"There is no hiding place. You can't get away from it. It is not pretty or enjoyable, the way things have gone. But it is only us that can get us out of it. We have to dust ourselves down now. The Premier League seems to enjoy throwing you these tough games.

"We need a result, however it comes. I'm not saying Southampton didn't have plenty of chances in the game but two ricochets are defining moments in the game. We need a result to get ourselves away from this."

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, speaking to Sky Sports: “We were beaten by the better side. We were up against players playing at the top of their game. Obviously we’re not.

“We had a good bit of possession at the start of the second half. I think we had the best chance in that period. Sander Berge should have scored. If he had, that changes the dynamics of the game.

“I’m not deflecting anything away from us. Individually, players aren’t playing anywhere near how well they can play. We’re scratching around to try and find the right system, but I thought they were really good as well.

“We went to a narrow four in midfield to put a bit more pressure on their players. I thought it was our best period in terms of competing and getting close to them, but a misplaced header and they countered on us. I don’t think Aaron [Ramsdale] can do anything with that finish [for the second goal].

“We have to keep going. We can’t just keep talking about it. As a team we’re not showing nearly enough of what we can produce. People keep saying things are tight. I thought they were brighter, sharper. If they didn’t get to the first ball they got to the second. It allowed them to control the game.

“Players doubt themselves individually and as a collective. That’s only normal, but we have to snap out of it. We have to look at our next game to try and get that win to get that belief and improve the confidence in the side.”

Southampton midfielder Nathan Redmond, speaking to BBC Sport: "It has been a tough start personally and when you are on the bench you want to make an impact and help your team score. I picked up a few niggles and players have come in and done well. You can't rest on feeling sorry for yourself. You need to be part of the team, even if that is just 10 or 15 minutes at the end of games.

I haven't seen the goal back. I think it came off my toe. But I will take it to get off the mark.

"You always want to do well but I would rather be seeing the team in the top half of the table. I just have to keep plugging away and hope it merits some starts. Rotations will come soon as there are a lot of games. But I am delighted for the clubs and the boys.

"We are sure of ourselves and what we can do. We just have to stay focused and keep plugging away."
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, speaking to BBC Sport: “We were beaten by the better side, a side on top of their game and full of confidence. They’re obviously a huge example of a team in a strong position compared to where they were last season.

“We knew their strengths, their press and forward runs. There weren’t many clear-cut opportunities but they were the better side. It was difficult for us to get any sort of rhythm in the game. As a player you hope to get to half-time at 1-0, that’s a decent platform to take the game to them in the second half.

“You have to keep working hard to gain that luck and that fortune. We still will. There’s plenty of examples of teams who have gone on to pick up points after a losing streak, but the longer it goes on the more it’s going to impact the team.

“I keep saying it has to come soon. We’re in trouble now, there won’t be a light at the end of the tunnel if we don’t change the situation in front of us.”
Sheffield United defender Enda Stevens: “We’re going through a sticky patch and struggling to get out of it. We got a foothold in the game after half-time, setting the tone and being on the front foot. The second goal takes a deflection and that kind of knocked the stuffing out of us.

“We just look a bit sorry for ourselves at the minute. Disappointments are going to happen. It just looks like we’re getting kicked at the minute. We just need to get playing like us, like last season. Hopefully things will change.

“We’re just staying focused on the football now. We’ve got to make things happen and not rely on luck. We’ve got to earn every point we can. Hopefully we can do that.”
