Southampton vs Newcastle United highlights (2-0)

Newcastle manager speaking to Sky Sports: "The best team won. We didn't get anywhere near where we were five days ago. We didn't look after the ball well enough and we gifted them two goals. We didn't do enough to win the game. We didn't handle the full press and it was a difficult night.

"The one thing you can't do at this level is give them the goals we did. We gave the ball away far too often. We knew what to expect from them - the full press - and unfortunately we couldn't play through it.

"The first 15 minutes was probably our worst spell after half-time. We couldn't get out. We kept giving the ball back to them and when you're in that situation it becomes difficult for. Congrtulations to Southampton on the night. They were far better than us and we couldn't cope with them.

"We go up and down too quick. That's one thing we have to resolve. We go along nicely then all of a sudden we don't play well enough in the game. It nags me."

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl to Match of the Day: "It was a very good performance again. We showed that we are one step further in our development now.

"Our fans will love it and they’ll make a picture of the table. For us it’s nice but it shouldn’t’ kill the hunger for more. We should stay hungry and we should feel anything is possible with this team.

"I must be very proud. We developed not with a lot of invested money but with a lot of invested work. We had some good results in the past two or three months and it was important everyone can see the philosophy we are following can be successful."
Southampton's Theo Walcott speaking to Sky Sports: "You can see on my face that I'm smiling, you know. It's a fantastic team at this moment in time.

"It's an absolute honour to be honest. Sadly there's no fans here today but we showed that we work hard for each other and there's so much trust. The work is showing. We are there with our performances it shows.

"We have being doing it from day one. It's the team we are. We hunt in packs and we work together. We like to counter-press and we did well. He [Che Adams] took the goal very well. I always worry when it's 1-0 though. We dominated the game but it shows the character we have got in the team.

"We have some leaders in that dressing room as well. I will be contributing a lot on the assists front. As long as the team keeps on winning, I'm sure I'll get my goal soon. It's nice to get the three points for the team.

On the penalty appeal: "No. I spoke to him afterwards. He has to go in and I had to go in. I felt it, trust me! Just like my wrist, I am a bruised man right now! But I got back up and it was the right decision, yes."

"I've enjoyed every minute since I've been here, no matter where I'm playing. Obviously Danny Ings is a massive miss. It will be nice to have him back soon. But I do enjoy playing up front. It's natural to me in any of those frontline positions.

"I've got some great memories here but I want to make some new ones. I feel like a kid again. I just want to express myself. The manager has faith in me and the team. I think it showed on the field."
