The new coach of Palermo Gian Piero Gasperini did not make the best of starts with the Italian club as he began his campaign with a defeat over Atalanta. Cristian Raimondi rose above everybody else inside the penalty box of Palermo and with a bullet header he scored the only goal out of the entire 90 minutes of the game.

FC Porto maintain their lead in the Portuguese League after picking up a convincing 4-0 victory over their visitor, Beira Mar, at Estadio Do Dragao. The home team opened the scoring through Jackson Martinez's acrobatic effort halfway into the first half before Silvestre Varela aded the second to give Porto a two goals lead before the break.
