Eintracht Frankfurt's ambition in securing their passage into the knock out stage of Europa League was halted this midweek as they suffered a rather shock away defeat against Maccabi Tel Aviv. Winning their first meeting couple of weeks back, Frankfurt were actually in a confident mood during their travel to face Maccabi on Thursday.
However, strong first half performance from the Israel side stunned Frankfurt as the home side got themselves in front after just 14 minutes through Eran Zahavi's effort. On the half hour mark, Barak Itzhaki extended Maccabi's lead and five minutes later he completed his brace to give his side a commanding lead during the first 45 minutes. Trailing by three goals triggered positive response from the Bundesliga side as they pulled two goal back in the second half through Srdan Lakic on 63 minutes and also Alexander Meier's spot kick on 67 minutes.
Failing to pick up that equalizing goal, despite dominating the second period eventually costing Frankfurt as instead of getting back on level terms, they conceded a fourth goal which was once again netted by Zahavi, deep in stoppage time.
