Milan's positive approach was rewarded when Adel Taarabt opened the scoring for the visitor on 20 minutes, which lasted until half time break.
Genoa tried hard to get back into the tie, but instead grabbing an equalizing goal, they found themselves further behind when a swift counter attack from Milan was finished off by Keisuke Honda on 56 minutes.
The home side refused to give up easily, but all they managed was to pull one goal back which happened from an own goal by keeper, Christian Abbiati on 73 minutes.
No more goals were scored in the remaining minutes as Rossoneri keeping that slender score line until the final whistle was blown.
