Despite the home side's ambition to win the game, it was Cagliari that struck the first blow when Marco Sau's forced Michele Canini to score an own goal after just two minutes of play. The host reacted positively after going down, as they poured forward vigorously in search for that important equalizing goal.
After several attempts, Atalanta finally got what they were searching for in the 57th minute when Gugliermo Stendardo headed home from a corner kick. Things didn't went well for the host in the final 10 minutes as they were forced to play with only 10 men after the sending off to Luigi Giorgi. Fortunately, Cagliari couldn't capitalize on their advantage as the Azzurri hold on to the 1-1 draw.
