Monaco's ambition in catching up with Paris Saint-Germain at the top of current French Ligue 1 standings suffered a blow this weekend as they picked up a disappointing home defeat over Valenciennes' on Friday. Playing in front of their home crowd, Monaco immediately set themselves in on an attacking mode, but instead of taking an early lead, they found themselves trailing when an own goal from Eric Abidal put the away side in front after 30 minutes of play.
Things were not going better for Monaco early in the second period as their opponent went two goals up on 58 minutes, this time the goal arrived from David Ducourtioux. Trailing 2-0 in that period, left the home side with not much choice aside from pushing further forward in search for more goals. However, they only managed to pull one back through James Rodriguez six minutes from time, which was not enough to even rescue a point from that weekend encounter.
