Lifting the FA Cup is every English player’s boyhood dream, and Steven Gerrard has done that.  However, the Liverpool skipper has not completed the dream and lifted the cup at Wembley.  While Liverpool remain on course for a possible FA Cup run to Wembley, one match looms on Sunday; the Carling Cup Final.

For the first time in 16 long-awaited years the Reds will return to Wembley Stadium.  After brushing aside the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City in the Carling Cup, through goals from Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll, Steven Gerrard, Craig Bellamy and more, Steven Gerrard may finally get his wish to complete the Wembley Dream and hoist above his head inside the spiritual home of football.

Gerrard has captained his country at Wembley Stadium, but has never played there with Liverpool.  The skippers has won two FA cups and two League cups, but all four victories came at Cardiff’s Millenium Stadium.  Gerrard scored twice in Wales as Liverpool won an epic 2006 FA Cup final against West Ham on penalties.

It was the Reds’ last major trophy.

‘Don’t get me wrong, we had some great days in Cardiff and I’ve got some fantastic memories of playing at the Millennium Stadium. But I’d have preferred to have won  those trophies at Wembley,’ Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo.  ‘When growing up as a kid, I dreamed about playing in Cup finals at Wembley. Then when I became captain of Liverpool, I dreamed about leading the team out there.’

The Reds have been adamant about a ‘maximum respect’ approach to the game, with the Reds taking on Championship-side Cardiff City.  Kenny Dalglish, Charlie Adam and Craig Bellamy have all stated their respect for Cardiff and admit they are going to approach the game like any other.  Gerrard has also expressed his respect to the Welsh side, but admits he is buzzing for the game.

‘To finally get the chance to achieve that will be amazing. I’ve experienced both the old and the new Wembley and I can tell you it’s a very special place.’
