Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard is convinced that the club’s transfer activity this summer will give them the opportunity to redress the balance in their long term rivalry with Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side moved ahead of Liverpool with their nineteenth league title last season but Gerrard believes things could be set to change. The Merseyside club have watched their fierce rivals Manchester United largely dominate football for the past 12 years whilst they have not won the league since 1990 when now boss Kenny Dalglish was in his first spell in charge of the club.

The only time they have been close to winning the Premier League since the turn of the century was in the 2008-2009 season where they finished second in league and lost just two games. They have failed win a trophy however since the 2006 FA Cup which is remarkable for a club that dominated English football for such a long period of time. They splashed the cash in January to secure the £34 million signing of Andy Carroll and the £25 million signing of Luis Suarez and both have impressed so far, they also signed Jordan Henderson for £20 million at the beginning of the month. The sale of Fernando Torres to Chelsea in January for £50 million was seen by many as good business for a player who is desperately short of form at the moment. Gerrard stated, ‘As a Liverpool fan and a player it’s frustrating when you see your arch-rivals lifting trophies but you’ve got to give credit where it’s due…Now the challenge is to equalise. We’ve got to make sure we’ve got a squad capable of going into the season and competing with Manchester United’.

They are expected to make at least one more addition to the club this summer with Stewart Downing and Charlie Adam both touted as possible targets whilst goalkeeper Pepe Reina will remain at the club following months of speculation. Gerrard is currently undergoing a period of rehabilitation following groin surgery in March but will be ready for the start of pre-season. The latest news can be found at www.liverpoolfc.tv.
