England 2-3 Netherlands
“England caretaker manager Stuart Pearce can take heart from his side’s resilience in almost earning a draw – but far too many gaping holes in defence once the Netherlands – and particularly Arjen Robben – hit their stride.”
England caretaker manager Stuart Pearce:
“We probably showed a little bit of naivety.
“I didn’t take the job to prove anything to anyone; I have a job with the Under-21’s.
“I am sure they will go through the process of getting someone in place but they know I am here if needed and everything is in place.”
“Maybe there was a lack of belief, which is something we have got to get into the squad going forward. In the end we were a bit disappointed to lose the game, but we’ve learnt a lot and learned a bit about the individuals for the summer and that was always the intention for tonight.”

England 0-1 Netherlands – Arjen Robben (57 mins)
What a goal. Arjen Robben picks up the ball deep inside his own half, powers away from a static midfield before taking advantage of a fine decoy run from Klaas Jan Huntelaar who took a defender away from the centre. Robben runs in on goal before dispatching a powerful low drive beyond Joe Hart.
England 0-2 Netherlands – Klaas Jan Huntelaar (58 mins)
It’s another fine goal for the Dutch – but it comes at a cost. Klaas Jan Huntelaar spreads the ball out wide to Dirk Kuyt on the right, his cross is a fine one and Huntelaar bullets a header into the roof of the net. Unfortunately he also connects very hard with Chris Smalling and both players are down.
England 1-2 Netherlands – Gary Cahill (85 mins)
Maybe this isn’t all over at Wembley. Leighton Baines puts a ball through for Chelsea centre-half Gary Cahill to run onto. I’ve no idea why he was the furthest man forward, but Cahill finishes with aplomb, turning inside Joris Mathijsen before shooting under Maarten Stekelenburg.
England 2-2 Netherlands – Ashley Young (90 mins)
What a comeback! And a lovely goal to bring the sides level. Stewart Downing’s cross from the left finds Scott Parker, the captain picks out Theo Walcott who in turn finds Phil Jones. Jones then plays a deft through-ball into the area for Ashley Young – who dinks it in. Top drawer.
England 2-3 Netherlands – Arjen Robben (90 mins)
What a few minutes, what a game. The Dutch go back ahead and it’s another fabulous individual goal from Arjen Robben. A cross from the left is headed up and away by Micah Richards, Mark van Bommel flicks it out to Robben on the right of the area, he cuts inside and curls a left-footed shot past Joe Hart. It takes a slight deflection off Gary Cahill but it’s a fine strike.
