Since his transfer from Ajax to Merseyside in January, Luis Suarez has taken the famous No. 7 shirt with pride and made it his own, much to Kopites delight.  However, the media and opposition in the form of players and managers have sung his name as a villain of the game; calling him a ‘diver.’

The Uruguyan hotshot has not yet been booked for simulation, however, there have been public outcries by players and managers alike over the striker’s antics that have attracted negative attention from the media.  When he has the ball a mixed chorus of boos and cheers ring across stadiums, but the talent the Liverpool No. 7 possesses has the ability to silence crowds everywhere.

Kenny Dalglish has given his backing to the striker since his arrival and is sure that the controversy and claims surrounding diving and racism are not affecting his prized asset.

They can keep talking and the wee man will keep playing, running amok, going past people, creating chances, scoring a few goals,’ said Dalglish, whose side face Swansea at Anfield.

‘He has nothing to prove to anybody about his credibility and nothing to prove to anybody as a player who plays football.’

Referring to Scharner, Dalglish added: ‘I think players should just concentrate on getting publicity for what they do on the pitch.

‘For us there is nothing to defend about Luis Suarez. I think people try and find it easy to criticise him because he is such a good player.’

There were vehement protests as referee Lee Mason pointed to the spot after his assistant Gary Beswick ruled Suarez had been fouled by Thomas. Yet replays showed there had been enough contact to bring him down – and his reaction was to chase the loose ball.

‘I don’t know how anyone can accuse him of diving there,’ said Dalglish.

‘If that was outside the box it was a free-kick, but he was back up on his feet. I don’t know what the problem was. He got injured at Stoke trying to stay on his feet. Why stand there and be kicked?’
