The past two-months have not been the most enjoyable for one Luis Suarez, at least at Liverpool that is. Though the striker is in free-scoring form for Uruguay, the Liverpool No.7 has found himself in a dry spell in front of goal, and in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
The FA have recently charged Luis Suarez over claims of racist remarks towards Patrice Evra during the Anfield clash with Manchester United, though the Uruguayan has opted to appeal and take the matter to court. Suarez was also charged with making an obscene gesture towards a group of Fulham fans following the Reds 1-0 loss, but has been backed by both Liverpool and opposition management.
Neil Warnock, who was on the recieving end of a “Luis Suarez Show” today in a 1-0 loss to the Reds, backed Suarez following the second charge by the FA, saying that they should focus their attention on abusive fans, and not the reactive players.
‘The FA should look into the chants by crowds and fine Premier League clubs if they give individual players so much abuse as they have done with Suarez,’ he told Daily Mail reporters.
‘If you’re going to do the player, they should also look into where these chants come from and look at fining the people or clubs concerned.
‘It’s getting ridiculous now, there’s nothing done about the chants that managers and players receive.
‘I’d be tempted to do what Suarez did. If the FA don’t take any action and then they get another Suarez situation, I’ll understand why it’s happened. Fans can do anything they want and as soon as a player reacts, he gets into trouble. That’s the standard I detest.
‘It’s all right saying it’s too many people to arrest, but if clubs allow groups of people to say anything they want, the FA or Premier League should fine the clubs.
‘We shouldn’t tolerate it. If it was racial abuse there’d be uproar. I think it’s just as bad when you’re talking about someone’s family. We shouldn’t accept it.’
Suarez seemed to have shrugged off the allegations and criticism within the comfort of Anfield, however, and put on a masterclass display in the Reds 1-0 win today over QPR. Both Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish and Warnock were full of praise for the Uruguayan, who scored the games only goal.
Dalglish told Liverpoolfc.tv: “The headlines don’t matter, do they? But there’ll be nice headlines for him tomorrow. He scored with a header, which doesn’t happen too often, and he played really well.”
QPR boss Warnock followed his counterpart into the press room and added: “I think Suarez looked amazing today.
“Oh to manage him.”
Dalglish also reflected on his sides performance as a whole, feeling his side were worthy winners on the day.
“Some of the football we played was brilliant in the first half,” he said.
“We will continue doing what we’re doing. We cannot change our beliefs.
“It was an excellent performance, we made a lot of chances, we got one goal and they never got any. Three points for us – the points tally is no less than we deserved but maybe the goals tally was. But one is enough when the other team don’t get an opportunity.
“The players showed great courage and belief to continue what we’ve been doing, and that’s pass and move, get into the box and create chances – one day we’re going to take them.”
Warnock agreed that Liverpool deserved all three points, but also said that his side showed great character to keep the result at 1-0.
“They pass it around for fun,” he said. “The players they’ve got, they’re going to cause any team a problem.
“They were the better side. Most people in the ground might have thought we’d go four or five down but we showed great resolve.”
